With Ryan's Carnival party yesterday, a planned family lunch today with more gifts and attention on the birthday boy, and the fact that he celebrated with his own dad last weekend, Mike completely forgot that today was Father's Day. Last night, I got a fun idea while Ryan was running around the house in his new pirate costume, pretending to be a waiter. (He unfolded the treasure map and used that as our menu - we pretended to order food and pay with his gold pirate coins for quite a while. He's been walking around the house saying, "Arrrrr" and calling everyone a "Scurvy Dog" all day.) Before Mike got out of bed, I had Ryan make up a menu to order his Father's Day breakfast in bed. I helped him with some of the letters on the cover of the menu...
Then I decided to let gooooooo of the control and let him sound out the words and write whatever letters he sounded out for each word. (which is what he really wanted to do anyway) So read the menu below phonetically.

Mike's choices were: Cheerios, Go Lean (Kashi), Special K, waffle, egg and that last item is supposed to be Rice Krispies. He selected eggs and waffles and I finally got to correctly check #73 off of my 101 in 1001 list. (last time I tried doing breakfast in bed, Mike was shaving by the time I got upstairs with his tray) The kids even had the idea to pick him flowers from the backyard.

After church, Mike's parents took us all to Red Robin to celebrate Ryan's birthday one more time. Red Robin even made a guest appearance!

When the servers sang to him, he was so embarrassed that he looked down and colored on his menu for a few seconds. It was hilarious.
I also have to note that yesterday, Ryan woke up very disappointed. He said he didn't feel older. I squeezed his arms and shoulders and said, "Oh yes you do!" His eyes lit up for a minute, then he responded, "But I thought I'd be able to feel my legs get longer..."

Mike's Father's Day wasn't completely overrun by Ryan's birthday. He spent about 6 hours this afternoon on a project in the backyard, so he practically had a whole day to himself! And it all started with a hand-written menu. I hope I remember to do that again...Mike loved it.
