Okay, locals: listen up. This post is for you. (for everyone else: check into co-ops in your area...they're everywhere) I mentioned the produce co-op that I do every other week, Bountiful Baskets. I got lots of questions and I know a ton of you haven't participated yet. Seriously - you have to check it out! It seems that each week, I'm getting more and more food.
This is what I just came home with for $15...
9 ears of corn
5 HUGE tomatoes
a lunch sack full of green beans
an eggplant
2 heads of broccoli
3 green peppers
7 bananas
a bag of grapes
a cantaloupe
8 apples
6 white peaches
6 plums
For $15 !!! They say it's $50 worth of produce; enough of each serving to feed a family of 4 for the two weeks between deliveries. And I decided to try their bread this time for $2 each. I got the 9 grain and the honey whole wheat. Trader Joe's just keeps raising the price of my $1.50 bread...it's now almost $2.50. I know, I know...it's only a dollar, but still, every little bit helps in this economy, right? There are a bunch of pick up sites around the valley, but if you don't see one close enough, they're looking for "hosts" to run new locations. I'm tossing the idea around in my head of talking to them about one near my house...like I need something else to do! Okay, I'm off to revise my meal plan for this week.

Ditto.
Also, the nice thing about this co-op is that it forces me to try new recipes with produce that I wouldn't normally buy.
For instance I used papayas (from two weeks ago, so they were nice and ripe) to make a delicious homemade lemonade. Oh man, it was good. Here is the link for it. http://www.recipezaar.com/107872
Great deal for me because this way I'm not driving all over town to buy the produce on sale. Another money saving tip. :)
I should really look into this. You have such a wonderful bounty. I love fresh veggies. I can almost taste the corn cooked on the grill... mmmm. Ok, I'll look to see if there is one in my area.

I'm sooooo with you on this kind of thing. We have a farmer's market twice a week here, all year long, and within walking-distance of our house. I LIVE for those two days of the week to get fresh stuff at a fraction of grocery store prices. The great thing is, there are also fresh bread, cheese, meat, and fish stalls as well. It's now a weekly tradition for LC and I to go pick out fresh fruit and veg together, and then I buy him quality fishsticks freshly baked (fried) at the fish vendors and take them home for lunch.
This is one of the things I LOVE about being in Europe .... these sorts of things are so much more readily available than in the US. I'm so glad you've been able to find one for you! They're fantastic, aren't they?! (did I ever take you to our market in London, by the way? I can't remember)
Happy fruit and veg shopping!
Where to you pick up your produce? I am very interested. I did something similar a couple months ago, but was disappointed with the selection and the price. Let me know. Thanks!
wow that is awesome. I can't seem to find any good co-ops that are near me. Near meaning I don't have to sit for an hour in traffic :).
As for trademarking my blog... I didn't know about it, my husband must have done it while I was asleep!

Hey- I'm in! I was doing Chef-to-Chef, which I love, but it's too pricey for the unemployed! Where do you get yours? Would you be interested in "car-pooling" your produce so we could cut down on pick up? Let me know. I'm pretty sure you have my e-mail, if not Leanne can give it to you! Also- fyi. Your link is wrong. It goes to bb.com not bb.org. Erin
